Between Sacramento and Miami

Bear's only been to California once but...

Even Bear understood the notion that California is a "liberal" or progressive state is a sick joke. While Miami fights to open an actual treatment center for unhoused people going in and out of the penal system with drug and mental health issues, California continues to attack these people in a vicious mannerjust dressed up with friendly tones.

On homelessness, liberal California and the ultraconservative Supreme Court largely agree
The Grants Pass ruling clears the way for punitive measures against homeless people. Officials from San Diego to San Francisco are all too eager to oblige.

The original McClatchy Paper, the Sacramento Bee (The Miami Herald is a McClatchy paper), loves to run pieces by one of their editorial staff who is clearly terrified, and wants you to be terrified, by people who are unhoused because he almost got a scooter stolen, had an unhoused woman ask him for wine--which provided, and he thought some dude was following him that one time.

This man is paid money to publish in the paper of record for the seat of government of the fourth largest economy in the world and he "almost" got a scooter stolen, had a person who was terrifying because she was unhoused ask him for wine one time and he was probably, maybe, possibly followed by some dude and can't stop writing about it (or his complaints about local sports teams).

(Side note, the columnist I'm rebuking in Sacramento is from Tennessee and I have been to Knoxville many times–talk to me one on one if you want to know what poverty in Knoxville is like, the short version is, it is shocking and not in a good way).

California, Florida and homelessness are connected through, in part, the feud of jack ass "governors" struggling with little man syndrome. The Florida governor posts images of a "poop map" allegedly showing where unhoused people have pooped in San Fransisco and the California governor fires back ignoring the key issues such as: you can't live outside in Florida year round because you'll die from exposure, while you can live quite comfortably outside year round in San Francisco (same with Seattle, another target of the Floridian's scorn).

Bear would make a better governor, much less president, than these two clowns.

Meanwhile, in a recent County Commission meeting for Miami-Dade County the commissioner representing Downtown Miami claimed to not know about the large homeless encampment near Jackson Memorial Hospital.

There's only two kinds of people who don't know about the homeless encampment outside Jackson Memorial: people who have never set foot within two miles of Jackson Memorial and people who are lying.

While Miami-Dade County does do a better job of caring for the unhoused than anywhere I'm aware of in California, Miami-Dade County is literally leading the charge in criminalizing homelessness, especially in the City of Miami Beach. Seriously.

And, as pointed out, a major factor in where unhoused persons choose to live is being able to tolerate the weather year round and South Florida's heat plus humidity is a killer. Death isn't the only consequence of heat exposure–there are many long term crippling conditions that can be caused by heat exposure and Florida leads the nation in heat-related illness.

AE558/AE558: Natural Heat-Related Deaths in Florida: 2010–2020
This publication discusses heat-related deaths in Florida from 2010 to 2020 and presents safety recommendations as well as useful resources to prevent heat-related illnesses. Written by Serap Gorucu, Clyde Fraisse, and Ziwen Yu, and published by the UF/IFAS Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, May 2021.

By the way, the commissioner lying about the not knowing about the homeless encampment outside of Jackson Memorial (and notably, the one outside the County Commission building where the commissioner uttered these falsehoods), is chair of the committee blocking the Miami Center for Mental Health & Recovery.

If you're looking for liberals or progressives, you can find them in Florida and California–just apparently not in positions of leadership.

Run for office. I'm thinking about it. I'm sick of the lack of integrity, the greed, and the inhumanity in local offices across the country.
